What is this Article?
The Preamble is the opening statement of the Constitution. It declares that the Constitution derives its authority from the people of India and sets out the nation's core values — justice, liberty, equality and fraternity — and its character as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.
Historical Background
Based on the Objectives Resolution moved by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1946. The words "Socialist", "Secular" and "Integrity" were added by the 42nd Amendment, 1976.
Why was it added?
To declare the philosophy, source of authority, and the core values that the entire Constitution seeks to achieve.
