Introduction
The Right to Information Act, 2005 empowers every Indian citizen to request information from public authorities, making government functioning more transparent and accountable. It replaced the older Freedom of Information Act, 2002.
Purpose
To promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authorities, contain corruption, and make democracy work for the people in a real sense.
Historical Background
The movement for RTI grew from grassroots campaigns in Rajasthan led by the MKSS in the 1990s. After sustained civil-society pressure, Parliament enacted the RTI Act in 2005, which came into force on 12 October 2005.
